 Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a type of retinal detachment characterized by subretinal fluid between the neurosensory retina and the underlying retinal pigment epithelium. RRD typically occurs when a full-thickness defect in the neurosensory retina allows fluid to enter the subretinal space and separate the retina from the retinal pigment epithelium. The most common cause of RRD is the degeneration of the vitreous body, a gel-like substance that helps maintain the eye's shape. The vitreous body liquefies over time, creating a potential space for fluid to accumulate. RRD is more common in myopic individuals and those who have previously undergone cataract surgery. Patients with RRD may experience light flashes, floaters, or a visual "curtain" that obscures part of the visual field.
