  Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is employed in the management of intense pain. It possesses a potency 50 to 100 times greater than that of morphine. There are two categories of fentanyl: pharmaceutical and nonpharmaceutical. Medical professionals prescribe the former, and is available in various forms like pills, lozenges, nasal or sublingual sprays, skin patches, and injections. On the other hand, nonpharmaceutical fentanyl is produced illicitly and is often mixed as a powder or liquid with illegal substances such as cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin or used in counterfeit prescription pills. Illicit drugs known as fentanyl analogues, including acetyl fentanyl, furanyl fentanyl, carfentanil, and U-47700, share chemical structures that resemble but are not identical to fentanyl.
