Vulvar cancer, also known as vulval cancer or cancer of the vulva, originates in the tissues of a woman's external genital area. It is relatively uncommon and can manifest in various parts of the vulva, including the labia majora and minora, clitoris, vaginal opening, and perineum (the area between the vulva and anus). The most prevalent type of vulvar cancer is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which develops from the squamous cells lining the vulvar surface. Other less common types include adenocarcinoma, melanoma, and basal cell carcinoma. Typical symptoms of vulvar cancer may include itching, burning, soreness, or pain in the vulva, the presence of a lump, sore, swelling, or wart-like growth, changes in the shape or color of a mole on the vulva, discharge from a lesion or sore spot in the vulva, and swollen lymph nodes in the groin area.
