Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can negatively impact the growth, nutritional well-being, and psychosocial development of affected children. Approximately 25% of individuals diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are under 18. Children and adolescents with ulcerative colitis often experience a more severe disease course, more extensive intestinal involvement at diagnosis, and faster disease progression than adults. It is not uncommon for pediatric patients to present with atypical symptoms. Typical symptoms of pediatric ulcerative colitis include abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, sometimes with blood, weight loss, fatigue, fever, and rectal bleeding.
