Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a human viral respiratory disease caused by the SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV). The virus is a member of the coronavirus family, characterized by its crown-like glycoprotein spikes and large single-stranded RNA structure. SARS-CoV is thought to have originated from an animal reservoir in the horseshoe bat and transmitted to humans through an intermediate host in the palm civet.
