  Functional dyspepsia, a chronic disorder affecting sensation and peristalsis in the upper digestive tract, entails abnormal movement in the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine after swallowing. It is more prevalent among women, owing to inherent gender-specific differences in gastrointestinal function. The disrupted motility in functional dyspepsia leads to heightened sensations in the upper gut (visceral hyperalgesia).
