A spinal cord injury (SCI) results from damage to the spinal cord, leading to temporary or permanent alterations in its functioning. SCI can be categorized into two main types: traumatic and non-traumatic. Traumatic SCI is the consequence of an external physical force that acutely injures the spinal cord, such as motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports-related injuries, or acts of violence. On the other hand, non-traumatic SCI is caused by acute or chronic diseases, such as tumors, infections, or degenerative disc disease, which initiate the primary injury.
