It is caused by mutations in the CHM gene located at Xq21.2, responsible for producing the Rab escort protein-1 (REP-1). In affected males, the condition typically manifests as night blindness (nyctalopia) during their first or second decade. This is followed by a narrowing of the peripheral visual field, with a progression from ring-shaped blind spots (annular scotomas) to a more extensive visual field loss. Visual acuity impairment becomes noticeable by mid-adulthood.
