 Exposure to a traumatic event that threatens one's physical or psychological well-being can lead to Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a potential psychopathological outcome. People with PTSD often have recurring memories, sensations, and emotions related to the traumatic event, which can manifest as sensory flashbacks or nightmares. They may also exhibit avoidance behavior, difficulty concentrating, hypervigilance, sleep disturbances, irritability, and emotional withdrawal. Additionally, PTSD is linked to an increased risk of suicide, suicidal thoughts, and negative clinical consequences such as persistent post-traumatic headaches and disruptions in sensory processing. Diagnosing PTSD can be challenging due to misidentification and underreporting, complicating efforts to determine its prevalence.
