These CFTR mutations disrupt chloride secretion, water movement, and sodium reabsorption, leading to the thickening of mucus and reduced clearance through cilia. Dehydrated mucus promotes endobronchial infections by a limited range of bacteria and triggers an exaggerated inflammatory response, ultimately resulting in severe bronchiectasis rather than fibrosis. Eventually, this condition leads to respiratory failure.
