Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a rare inherited disorder affecting the body's red blood cell production. It typically appears in infancy and is characterized by anemia, which can cause symptoms such as paleness, difficulty feeding, and failure to thrive. About 50% of cases of DBA are caused by mutations in certain genes that produce ribosomal proteins S19, L5, L11, or S26, while mutations in other genes, such as S7, S24, S17, S10, cause a small percentage. In addition to anemia, around 50% of patients with DBA also have congenital malformations, and a higher rate may have premature birth (20%), low birth weight (28%), and growth delays (22%).
