 Uterine leiomyomas, commonly referred to as fibroids or myomas, are noncancerous tumors primarily affecting women of reproductive age. Tumors arise from the smooth muscle cells of the uterus, specifically the myometrium. While the exact cause of uterine fibroids is not fully understood, it has been suggested that ovarian hormones may play a crucial role in their development. Uterine fibroids are classified based on location; the three types are subserosal (projecting outside the uterus), intramural (within the myometrium), and submucosal (projecting into the uterine cavity). Symptoms associated with these tumors may include irregular or excessive bleeding leading to anemia, pelvic pain or pressure, bowel and bladder dysfunction, pain during sexual intercourse, infertility, and recurrent miscarriage.
