Heparin ‐ induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a potentially devastating immune-mediated adverse drug reaction caused by the emergence of antibodies that activate platelets in the presence of heparin. Despite thrombocytopenia, bleeding is rare; HIT is strongly associated with thromboembolic complications involving both the arterial and venous systems. Heparin is widely used for thromboprophylaxis or treatment in many clinical situations, including cardiovascular and orthopedic surgery and invasive procedures, acute coronary syndromes, venous thromboembolism, atrial fibrillation, peripheral occlusive disease, dialysis, and during extracorporeal circulation. Heparin ‐ induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is the most important and frequent drug ‐ induced type of thrombocytopenia. It is associated with significant morbidity and mortality if unrecognized. Unfortunately, because thrombocytopenia is common in hospitalized patients and can be caused by various factors, HIT often remains unrecogni...
