Its pathogenesis is complex and not fully understood, with multiple pruritogens likely involved rather than a single systemic mediator. The development of cholestatic pruritus is multifaceted, intricate, and lacks clear delineation. While some suggest a model wherein a singular systemic pruritogen induces itch, multiple pruritogens probably play a role.
