  Progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF) is a lung disease that gets worse over time. It is caused by scarring of the lungs, which makes it harder to breathe. PPF can occur in people with any interstitial lung disease (ILD). However, it is more common in people with certain types of ILD, such as idiopathic non-specific interstitial pneumonia (iNSIP), connective tissue disease-related ILD (CTD-ILD), and fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis. PPF is more likely to occur in older people who have smoked cigarettes, have bronchiectasis (widening of the airways), have a certain pattern of scarring on their lungs on a high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scan, have not had their disease improve, or stabilize, have short telomere syndrome, are Black American, or have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
