Osteomyelitis is a serious infection of the bone that can present in several significant syndromes, including hematogenous osteomyelitis, vertebral osteomyelitis, osteomyelitis after trauma, and diabetic foot infection. The bone is generally resistant to infection but may become susceptible due to trauma, ischemia, or foreign bodies, which expose bone sites to which microorganisms can bind. Certain bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, adhere to the bone by expressing receptors for components of the bone matrix, including laminin, fibronectin, collagen, and bone sialoglycoprotein.
