  Hypertonicity, a clinical term for increased resistance to movement, is a common condition in the upper limbs of both children and adults who have suffered brain injuries due to cerebral palsy, stroke, or traumatic incidents. This condition stems from changes in neural excitability, spasticity, and alterations in the biomechanical properties of muscles and connective tissues. The hypertonicity in the affected upper limb and other effects of brain injury, such as muscle weakness and learned non-use, can lead to a diminished ability to perform controlled movements. These include reaching, grasping, manipulating, and releasing objects.
