Tetanus is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. It is characterized by painful muscle spasms and generalized hypertonia, commonly affecting the jaw and neck. The bacterium is found in soil, dust, and animal feces and may enter the body through wounds or skin breaks. The symptoms are caused by toxins produced by C. tetani, including tetanospasmin and tetanolysin. Four main types of tetanus exist: generalized, neonatal, localized, and cerebral. The most specific symptom of tetanus is trismus, which may be present in many other conditions. Treatment involves wound debridement, supportive management, antibiotic therapy, human tetanus immunoglobulin, neuromuscular blockade, and controlling various manifestations and complications.
