The infection process of N. gonorrhea begins with the adherence of gonococci to epithelial cells, followed by local invasion of these cells. Adhesion is facilitated by multiple surface proteins, including pili, hair-like appendages covering the bacterial surface. Pili allow the bacteria to attach to epithelial cells from a distance and promote cellular invasion. Additionally, pili provide motility and protection to the bacteria.
