Historically, APL has been known to have a severe bleeding tendency and a poor prognosis. APL accounts for approximately 10 to 15% of all adult AML cases diagnosed in the United States annually. The clinical presentation of APL typically includes symptoms such as pallor secondary to anemia, bleeding, fatigue, mild fever, swollen gums, frequent minor infections, loss of appetite, weight loss, discomfort in bones or joints, enlarged spleen, and enlarged liver. The disease is most commonly diagnosed in patients between 20 and 50. The primary treatment for APL is all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), also known as tretinoin.
