  Coccidioidomycosis, also known as San Joaquin Valley fever, is a fungal infection caused by the fungi Coccidioides immitis and C. posadasii. It is typically transmitted through inhalation of airborne arthroconidia, which deposit into terminal bronchioles and enlarge to form spherules. Later, the spherules rupture, releasing new endospores and enabling the fungal life cycle. It can also disseminate to other body parts, including the bones, brain, skin, and lymphatic system. The symptoms of primary coccidioidal pneumonia often include cough, fever, and chest pain. Without further testing, it can be difficult to distinguish from other types of pneumonia, and the diagnosis may not be immediately considered in areas where the infection is common. Physical signs of the infection may be absent or limited to certain sounds when the chest is listened to with a stethoscope, and certain areas may be dull to touch.
