  Chronic Hand Eczema (CHE) is defined as either a long-term, relapsing course of HE or HE that is unresponsive to standard treatment with emollients and topical corticosteroids for more than three months or recurrence of symptoms twice within a year despite treatment. Clinical signs and symptoms of Chronic Hand Eczema comprise classic features of eczema localized to the hands and fingers, including dryness, erythema, edema, hyperkeratosis, scaling, lichenification, vesiculation/ blistering, fissures, pruritus, and pain. Eczema and dermatitis are used as synonyms. Both terms are used interchangeably to describe a particular type of inflammatory disorder of the skin that targets the epidermis and the dermis. Acute and subacute HE can be defined as eczema, localized to the hands, that lasts for less than three months and does not occur more than once per year.
