  Ichthyosis is a collection of skin diseases that causes dry, itchy skin that appears red, scaly, and rough. There is a spectrum of symptoms from minor to severe. Ichthyosis symptoms can vary in severity from minor to severe. The inherited forms of ichthyosis are all caused by mutations in the genes. Numerous gene alterations have been found; the inheritance pattern varies according to the kind of ichthyosis. The ichthyoses represent a diverse array of skin cornification disorders, encompassing both inherited and acquired forms. They result from abnormalities in keratinocyte differentiation and the epidermal barrier formation. Consequently, there is an increase in transepidermal water loss and inflammation due to compromised skin barrier function.
