  Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a primary immunodeficiency disorder marked by a heightened susceptibility to severe bacterial and fungal infections. This condition arises due to a deficiency in the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase enzyme within the phagocytes of affected individuals, impairing their ability to produce superoxide. Clinically, CGD is characterized by recurrent infections primarily caused by a limited spectrum of pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Aspergillus species, Klebsiella species, Burkholderia cepacia, Serratia marcescens, and Salmonella species. Additionally, patients often experience inflammatory complications, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Management of CGD involves preventive strategies such as antibacterial prophylaxis with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and antifungal prophylaxis, typically with itraconazole.
