 Extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) is characterized by rapid and widespread growth, making it one of the most lethal forms of cancer. Unlike limited-stage SCLC (LS-SCLC), which has not yet metastasized and can potentially be cured, ES-SCLC is not curable. ES-SCLC is characterized by widespread lung tumor growth, involvement of the other lung, lymph nodes on the opposite side of the chest, or other parts of the body. It may also extend to the fluid surrounding the lungs. Due to its rapid and early metastasis, most individuals with small-cell lung cancer are diagnosed with extensive-stage disease before symptoms become apparent. In most cases, patients diagnosed with ES-SCLC who undergo chemotherapy and prophylactic cranial irradiation still experience persistent intrathoracic disease.
