Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a ubiquitous virus that infects the majority of humans of all ages. CMV is a member of the herpes virus family which includes the herpes simplex viruses and the viruses that cause chickenpox and mononucleosis. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a species of the Cytomegalovirus genus of viruses, of the viral family Herpes viridae or herpes viruses, and is the most common of all cytomegaloviruses. The primary infection manifests as an asymptomatic or self-limited febrile illness in immuno-competent individuals, after which CMV establishes life-long latency in various cells which serve as reservoirs for reactivation and as carriers of infection to susceptible individuals.
