  Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a condition in which skeletal muscle and connective tissue, such as tendons and ligaments, gradually deteriorate and are replaced by bone. This condition causes bone formation outside the skeleton, limiting movement. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is characterized by congenital bilateral hallux valgus malformations and early-onset heterotopic ossification, which may be spontaneous or precipitated by trauma, including intramuscular vaccinations. Painful, recurrent soft-tissue swellings (flare-ups) may precede localized heterotopic ossification. Heterotopic ossification can occur at any location but typically affects regions near the axial skeleton in the early/mild stages before progressing to the appendicular frame. This process generally becomes noticeable in early childhood, beginning with the neck and shoulders and going down the body and into the limbs.
