Malignant mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer arising from the mesothelial cells that line various viscera. It is primarily associated with asbestos exposure and is observed in the pleural lining (malignant pleural mesothelioma). The exact mechanisms by which asbestos exposure leads to the development of malignant mesothelioma are not fully understood but are believed to involve repeated pleural inflammation, interference with cell division, activation of proto-oncogenes, and oxidative stress.
