  Bacterial meningitis or meningococcal meningitis is a type of meningitis caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis. Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain or spinal cord. This inflammation can start suddenly (acute) or gradually (progressive) (subacute). Symptoms may include fever, headache, stiff neck, and aching muscles. Nausea, vomiting, and other symptoms are possible. It spreads faster than any other type of acute bacterial meningitis. Meningococcal meningitis involves the central nervous system.
