  Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by intense fear and anxiety in situations where escape might seem difficult. This disorder typically leads to avoiding situations like traveling in a vehicle, being alone outside the home, or being in crowded areas. Typically identified in young adults, the average age of onset for agoraphobia is in the mid to late twenties. While the specific causes of agoraphobia are not definitively known, several etiological factors have been proposed, including parental overprotectiveness, childhood fears or night terrors, early experiences of grief or bereavement, traumatic childhoods, or a genetic predisposition.
