  Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disorder in which the body's immune system attacks its peripheral nervous system by mistake—the network of nerves located outside the brain and spinal cord. An infection often precedes Guillain-Barré syndrome. This could be a bacterial or viral infection. GBS may also be triggered by vaccine administration or surgery. In the context of Zika virus infection, an unexpected increase in cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome has been described in affected countries. The most likely explanation of evidence from outbreaks of Zika virus infection and Guillain-Barre syndrome is that Zika virus infection triggers GBS. The prevalence of Guillain-Barre syndrome is estimated to be 6 to 40 cases per 1 million people. AMAN and AMSAN together account for 30 to 50 percent of cases in Asian countries and Latin America but only 3 to 5 percent of cases in North America and Europe.
