  The cornea is a clear, transparent, dome-shaped structure covering the eye's anterior portion. In adults, the cornea is approximately 0.5 millimeters thick and consists of five major layers: The epithelium (the outermost layer with regenerative capacity) Bowman's membrane (a tough, protective layer) The stroma (the thickest layer containing collagen fibrils) Descemet's membrane (a thin layer) The endothelium (a single-cell-thick innermost layer) Due to the high density of nerve endings, the cornea is susceptible. Corneal edema is caused by dehydration, viral infections, endothelial disorders, ocular surgery, traumatic injury, increased intraocular pressure, and, occasionally, toxins. Endothelial Fuchs' dystrophy is the most prevalent cause of corneal edema.
