 Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) is an acute pulmonary parenchymal infection in an individual who has not been hospitalized in the last 14-days and is not a resident of a nursing home or long-term care facility. The pathogen causing Community-acquired pneumonia is classified into; Typical agents (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Group A Streptococci, anaerobes, and gram-negative organisms), and Atypical agents (Legionella, Mycoplasma, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and C. psittaci) globally. H. influenzae and S. pneumoniae are the two most common causes of bacterial pneumonia. Colonization of the pharynx with pathogens, followed by micro-aspiration, is the mechanism of entry into the lower respiratory tract.
