 Systemic candidiasis, also referred to as acute disseminated candidiasis, is a type of fungal infection caused by species of Candida. It is characterized by the presence of Candida in ordinarily sterile sites such as blood, pleural fluid, and peritoneal fluid. It can result in various symptoms, including fever, hypotension, and leukocytosis. The most common cause of systemic candidiasis is Candidemia, which occurs when Candida enters the bloodstream. This type of infection is particularly prevalent among hospitalized individuals in high-income countries. It can affect multiple organ systems, including the retina, kidney, liver, spleen, bones, and central nervous system. Chronic disseminated candidiasis is associated with liver or spleen involvement and often occurs in individuals recovering from chemotherapy-induced neutropenia.
