 Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a parasitic disease caused by long, slender nematode worms of the subfamily Filarioidea. LF's three primary causative agents are Brugia malayi, Brugia timori, and Wuchereria bancrofti, with over 90% of cases being attributed to the latter. This disease is primarily found in tropical regions between 41° N and 37° S. The transmission of the parasites occurs via the bite of an infected female mosquito, which deposit larvae on the skin at the site of the bite. The larvae then enter the lymphatic vessels, where they mature into adult worms for 6 to 12 months. Adult female worms have a life cycle of 7 years and can release up to 10,000 microfilariae daily. These microfilariae are transported via the lymphatic flow and enter the bloodstream.
