Symptomatic urinary infection, or a complicated urinary tract infection (UTI), can affect the bladder or kidneys and primarily afflicts individuals with structural or functional abnormalities in their genitourinary tract. Most UTIs arise from colonizing the urogenital area by bacteria typically found in the rectal and perineal regions. The usual culprits include Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, and various Enterococcus or Staphylococcus species, with Escherichia coli being the most prevalent, followed by Klebsiella. Candida colonization is also possible in residential care patients, diabetics, those with indwelling catheters, or individuals with compromised immune systems.
