  Vascular trauma pertains to the damage inflicted on a blood vessel, whether it is an artery responsible for carrying blood to an extremity or organ or a vein involved in returning blood to the heart. In military conflicts, the majority of vascular traumas stem from fragments generated by ballistic weaponry, such as artillery, rockets, grenades, and bombs. Vascular trauma can come in three forms: blunt, penetrating, or combination. Vascular surgeons classify these injuries based on the nature of the trauma. This widespread adoption notably contributed to a significant reduction in the rate of amputations. Vascular injuries include spasm, thrombosis, contusion/intimal flap, laceration/transection, arteriovenous (A-V) fistula, aneurysm, pseudoaneurysm, and arterial emboli.
