  Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a type of liver inflammation that occurs when your immune system attacks liver cells. Although the exact cause of autoimmune hepatitis is unknown, but genetic and environmental factors appear to interact over time to cause the disease. Untreated autoimmune hepatitis can result in liver scarring (cirrhosis) and, eventually to liver failure.
