  Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for an estimated 60% to 80% of cases. It is a progressive and neurodegenerative disease characterized by three major hallmarks in the brain: Amyloid plaques, which are abnormal clumps made of proteins, remnants of neurons, and bits of other nerve cells. Neurofibrillary tangles (NETs), which are tangled bundles of fibers, including clumps of a protein called tau, are found inside neurons. Loss of connections between neurons is responsible for memory and learning. Alzheimer's disease brain changes (pathology) and the brain changes of one or more other causes of dementia, such as Lewy body disease or Cerebrovascular disease. This is called mixed pathologies, and if recognized during life, it is called mixed dementia.
