 Ebola viruses lead to a severe and frequently fatal condition called Ebola virus disease (EVD), previously identified as Ebola hemorrhagic fever. Ebola viruses are categorized within the Filoviridae virus family. Particles of Filovirus take on elongated forms, at times branching, exhibiting diverse shapes, and can extend up to 14,000 nanometers in length with a diameter of 80 nanometers. There are five distinct subtypes of Ebola viruses: Zaire, Sudan, Bundibugyo, Tai Forest (formerly recognized as Côte d'Ivoire), and Reston. Transmission of the Ebola virus occurs through direct exposure to blood or other bodily fluids, such as semen, feces, or vomit, from individuals (or animals) who are infected. This includes close contact with deceased victims of EVD, who remain highly contagious. Infection can also arise from contaminated objects like needles, syringes, clothing, and bedding carrying the virus.
