Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare form of cancer that most commonly affects the uterus but also affects other areas such as the bladder or gastrointestinal system. It is designated a “soft tissue sarcoma” and originates in the smooth or involuntary muscle. LMS is considered cancer and is different from benign leiomyoma. LMS is considered “treatable” when caught early. Etiology- The exact cause of leiomyosarcoma is unknown. Researchers speculate that genetic factors may play a contributing role in causing LMS. In individuals with cancer, including leiomyosarcoma, malignancies may develop due to abnormal changes in the structure and orientation of specific cells known as oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes. Oncogenes control cell growth; tumor suppressor genes control cell division and ensure that cells die correctly. The exact cause of changes to these genes is unknown. Epidemiology- According to the American Cancer Society, at least 15,000 new cases of soft tissue sarcoma occur each year ...
