 Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory condition where the body's immune system targets the lining of joints, leading to inflammation and pain. It primarily affects the synovial membranes of multiple joints. The most damaging aspect of this disease involves the abnormal proliferation and division of synovial cells, causing synovial thickening and the eventual formation of pannus, an inflammatory tissue layer. Pannus infiltrates the joints, leading to the deterioration of articular cartilage, subchondral bone, ligaments, and tendons.
