The three histological subtypes of mesothelioma are epithelioid, sarcomatoid, and mixed, with the epithelioid subtype associated with a better prognosis. Malignant pleural mesothelioma spreads locally, initially affecting the parietal pleura and then spreading to the visceral pleura, chest wall, diaphragm, or mediastinum.
