  Allergic conjunctivitis is one of the most ordinary forms of conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis causes red, watery, itchy, or gritty eyes. It usually happens when a person's eyes contact with an allergen, a substance that makes the body's immune system overreacting. Symptoms arise due to the body's overreacting immune system, which causes histamine and other active substances to be released through mast cells. The vision becomes sore and inflamed. The nerve endings are irritated when blood vessels dilate or expand. As a result, tears are secreted more frequently. Typically, the condition is not painful and does not cause light sensitivity in the eyes.
