 Adrenal insufficiency (AI) or Addison’s disease is a rare disorder characterized by inadequate cortisol and aldosterone production. The symptoms of classic Addison’s disease, also known as primary adrenal insufficiency, result from the insufficient production of these two hormones, cortisol and aldosterone. Diagnosis is based on measuring the adrenal corticosteroid hormones, their regulatory peptide hormones, and stimulation tests. It is classified as primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI) or secondary adrenal insufficiency (SAI). PAI results from intrinsic disease to the adrenal cortex, most commonly due to autoimmune adrenalitis. SAI is caused by insufficient or deficient corticotropin production predominantly due to pituitary disease.
