 Congenital Generalized Lipodystrophy (CGL) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by a near complete absence of functional adipose tissue from birth. One of the most ordinary features is insulin resistance, a condition in which the body's tissues cannot recognize insulin, a hormone that usually helps to regulate blood sugar levels. Insulin resistance may develop into a more severe disease called diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, congenital generalized lipodystrophy causes an abnormal fat buildup in the liver (hepatic steatosis), leading to an enlarged liver (hepatomegaly) and liver failure. Some people who are affected develop hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a type of heart disease that can lead to heart failure and an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia) that can lead to sudden death.
