Molluscum contagiosum, commonly known as water warts, is a harmless skin condition characterized by dome-shaped, round, and pinkish-purple skin lesions referred to as mollusca. These lesions initially appear as shiny bumps with a central dimple or whitish core, ranging from pinhead to pencil eraser-sized. They can appear anywhere on the skin except for the palms and soles, with common sites including the neck, armpits, sides of the chest, thighs, buttocks, genitals, and face. The number of bumps can vary from one to several, often clustering. This condition is caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV), a double-stranded DNA poxvirus. There are four known subtypes of this virus, with MCV-1 predominantly found in children and MCV-2 primarily responsible for skin lesions in individuals with HIV.
