Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, is commonly found in solvents, antifreeze, and fuel. Upon ingestion, methanol is rapidly absorbed and metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) in the liver, distributed throughout the body water with a volume distribution of approximately 0.77 L/kg, and eliminated as unchanged parent compounds. The clinical manifestations of methanol poisoning (MP) typically occur within 0.5-4 hours post-ingestion and may include symptoms such as gastrointestinal disturbances and central nervous system suppression. Following a latent period of 6-24 hours, depending on the absorbed dose, decompensated metabolic acidosis may occur, characterized by symptoms such as blurred vision and early or late blindness. The estimated least lethal dose of methanol for adults is approximately 10 mL. Complications associated with methanol toxicity include metabolic acidosis, permanent visual deficits, Parkinson-like disease, coma, respiratory and circulatory failure, compl...
