  Neutropenic fever is characterized by a single oral temperature of 101°F (38.3°C) or more or a consistent temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) for at least an hour, in conjunction with an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of less than 1500 cells/microliter. Identifying the exact cause of the infection is often challenging, leading to it being categorized as a fever of unknown origin (FUO). This classification is used for neutropenic cases where the fever exceeds 38.3°C, and there’s no clinical or microbiological evidence of infection. Neutropenic fever is a common and severe complication in patients with hematopoietic cancers or those receiving chemotherapy. It occurs when an infectious agent encounters a neutropenic patient. The diagnostic process involves extensive blood tests, including a complete blood count to evaluate neutropenic levels and blood, urine, and throat cultures to determine the source of the infection.
