Genital warts, or condyloma acuminatum, represent a sexually transmitted infection from the human papillomavirus (HPV). These infections primarily spread through skin-to-skin contact, typically occurring during sexual activity. Notably, approximately 90% of individuals exposed to HPV do not develop genital warts, with only about 10% of infected individuals transmitting the virus. Genital warts are caused explicitly by HPV types 6 and 11, which differ from the viral types responsible for cervical and anal cancer. Several risk factors contribute to the persistence of HPV, including age, smoking, immunosuppression, and concurrent infection with multiple HPV types. Diagnosis of genital warts is commonly visual, although a biopsy may be necessary for confirmation. Smaller warts may sometimes be mistaken for molluscum contagiosum.
